How to Prepare for Your Lab Test

Simple tips to help you get accurate results and have a smooth experience at the lab.

General Preparation Tips

  • Bring a valid photo ID and your test order confirmation.
  • Wear clothing with sleeves that can be easily rolled up for blood draws.
  • Stay hydrated unless instructed otherwise — water helps make blood draws easier.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before testing.
  • Let the lab know about any medications or supplements you are taking.

Fasting Requirements

Some tests require you to avoid eating for 8–12 hours beforehand. Common fasting tests include:

  • Lipid panels (cholesterol tests)
  • Fasting blood glucose
  • Basic metabolic panel (in some cases)
  • Certain hormone tests

You can usually drink water during the fasting period. Avoid coffee, tea, juice, and other beverages unless your provider says otherwise.

Medications & Supplements

Do not stop taking prescription medications without consulting your doctor. However, some over-the-counter supplements and medications can affect test results:

  • Antihistamines may interfere with allergy testing.
  • Biotin (vitamin B7) supplements can affect hormone and cardiac test results.
  • NSAIDs like ibuprofen may affect kidney function tests.

What to Expect at the Lab

Most lab visits are quick and straightforward. After checking in, a phlebotomist will call you back for sample collection. Blood draws typically take less than 5 minutes. Urine and saliva samples are collected in private.

Getting Your Results

Most routine tests return results within 1–2 business days. You will receive a secure email or text notification when your results are ready to view in your patient portal.
