Overview

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by high uric acid levels. Crystals form in joints, causing sudden severe pain, redness, and swelling. Most commonly affects the big toe.

Diagnosis

Joint fluid analysis confirms diagnosis by finding uric acid crystals. Blood tests check uric acid levels and kidney function.

Treatment

  • NSAIDs (Naproxen, Ibuprofen)
  • Colchicine
  • Corticosteroids (Prednisone)
  • Allopurinol (long-term prevention)
  • Dietary changes (avoid alcohol, high-purine foods)
