Errors in Exercise – Work Smarter, Not Harder

Stephenie Meyer

Many people think that exercise is all about sweating. As long as you’re sweating, you’re getting a good workout. But this isn’t actually true. While sweat is certainly a good indicator of effort applied, it doesn’t mean that this effort on your part is actually being used effectively. If you want to get the most out of your workouts, then it’s important to really understand how the body works so that you aren’t wasting your efforts or spinning your wheels. Avoiding the most common exercise errors is fairly simple, and it can help you to get so much more out of your workouts.

Errors in Exercise

Good execution begins with good preparation. One of the most common exercise errors is that people are so eager to begin their workout that they fail to prepare their bodies for the hard work that they’re about to do. It’s important to stretch and warm up before you begin your exercise session. Stretching can prevent injury, and warming up helps your body to ease into full exercise mode. This can not only help to prevent injury, but can even help you to get more out of your workout, since your heart rate is already up once you begin exercising in earnest.

Some people think that the harder you go out it, the better your workout. But another of the most common exercise errors is working too hard. If you lift too much weight, you could seriously injure yourself. You could also overstrain your muscles, which will require you to rest them for a significant amount of time before you can work them out again. When lifting weights, be sure not to jerk your muscles in an effort to get in that last rep. That could also lead to injury. Exercising too intensely can lead to burnout, and longer periods of moderate exercise are actually more effective.

It’s also a mistake not to exercise intensely enough. Some people hear “moderate” and think “light.” You don’t want to sprint until you collapse, but that doesn’t mean that you should just saunter around the track. A light jog is moderate and will give you better results. If you can do eight to twelve reps with a three-pound weight, try a five-pounder. Challenging yourself is key to making sure that you build more lean muscle, which will in turn burn fat. This is one of the most common exercise errors, and it’s why so many people complain that they’re not losing weight, even though they’ve been “working out.”

The last of the most common exercise errors is two-fold: most people do not drink enough water while they exercise. Working out is hard on your body, and it’s important to stay hydrated. But this doesn’t mean that you need special hydration. Sports drinks and energy bars are formulated to give you a burst of power and speed, but you really don’t need them unless you’re a performance athlete that needs to be at the top of his game. For a moderate workout, plain water is just fine.
