Eating Out at Restaurants – How to Keep It Healthy

Stephenie Meyer

It’s become common knowledge that eating fast food can be bad for you. But it’s not just fast food that has the potential to break your diet. Eating out at restaurants can be hazardous to your health. Some people think that a salad is a safe bet, but, by now, we’ve all heard that some salads at restaurants have over 1,000 calories – that’s more than half of the recommended calories you should consume in a day. But we can’t (and don’t want to) avoid eating out completely. But ordering smart is the key to eating out: how to keep it healthy.

Eating Out at Restaurants

Keeping an eye out for little items filled with unnecessary calories is one of the keys to eating out: how to keep it healthy. You don’t really need that piece of bread before the meal. You don’t really need more than one cocktail or glass of wine. You don’t really need all of those calorie-laden garnishes on your salad. By cutting out the items that you don’t really need in order to enjoy your meal, you can splurge a little bit without going completely overboard and undoing all of the hard work you’ve been doing to keep yourself fit, trim, and healthy.

Knowing what’s good and healthful to eat at a restaurant can be a great help in eating out: how to keep it healthy. You definitely don’t want that 1,000-calorie salad. You want to stay away from creamy dishes. You don’t want any biscuits, croissants, pot pies, pastries, or quiches, which are packed with calories. You want to ask for whole grain breads, pizza crusts, and pastas whenever they’re available. If the restaurant offers a “healthy selection” type of menu, order from it. Get lots of veggies. Get chicken or fish instead of beef. By making smart choices, you can enjoy a meal out without derailing your diet.

It’s also helpful to pay attention to what you’re eating if you’re eating out: how to keep it healthy. You can take in a lot of unnecessary calories if you inadvertently clean your plate while you’re absorbed in your friend’s story of his or her latest breakup. To avoid eating too much, you can ask for a to-go container before you even get started. Remove some of the food on your plate, leaving only the portion that you know you can have without feeling guilty about it later. That way, you can clean your plate without having to worry about stopping yourself before it’s too late.

That’s the trick to eating out: how to keep it healthy. It’s important not to deprive yourself; this could lead to frustration and could even lead you to give up on your diet because it’s just too hard to avoid good food. But by indulging in moderation and being practical and realistic in your indulgences, you can treat yourself without undoing all of your hard work. If you do it right, you can enjoy eating out fairly regularly without having to feel guilty about it.
